Illinois OSHA: Compliance 101 for Fire Departments/Districts
presented by Erik Kambarian, Illinois Department of Labor Downstate Enforcement Manager
Join Erik Kambarian for an introductory overview of the Illinois Department of Labor’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health (IL-OSHA). This presentation will include information on the IL-OSHA inspection process, injury and illness recordkeeping and reporting, and occupational safety and health standards applicable to fire departments.
Additionally, the presentation will describe violations commonly encountered during fire department inspections and explain IL-OSHA’s commitment to improving occupational safety and health for Illinois firefighters through outreach and education. IL-OSHA is also working on a comprehensive fire department compliance guide that should serve as a foundational resource document for Illinois fire departments.
IL-OSHA is focused on inspecting fire departments since firefighting is a high hazard occupation.
IL-OSHA has no motivation or interest in shutting down fire departments.
IL-OSHA inspectors are not measured on how many citations or monetary penalties they recommend.
IL-OSHA inspectors will work with departments that work with them in a collaborative manner to improve employee safety.
