Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshall

Dear Fire Chief, City Manager or District Truste:

According to state law, it is mandated that ALL fire departments and fire protection districts report to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, all fire activity within your community.

It has come to my attention, that not all administrative personnel are aware of this. I am reaching out to you to ensure that your fire department is in compliance of this mandate. Enclosed you will find information regarding the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) program. If your department or district is in compliance with reporting to NFIRS, you may disregard this notice.

Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this important matter.
Sincerely,
J. T. Somer
Illinois State Fire Marshal

ATTENTION:

ALL ILLINOIS FIRE DEPARTMENTS

AND FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICTS

Please be advised that according to the Illinois Compiled Statutes, ILCS 425 25/6 Fire Investigation Act, all fire departments and fire protection districts are mandated to report all fire incidents via the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS). It is required that you report even if there is no fire activity.

All reports must be reported to the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) by the 15th of every month. Additionally, if your department has a change in officer, change of address, or other communication change, it is also required that you notify OSFM immediately.

Note: This information is critical to many Illinois Fire Service related issues and initiatives. FEMA, now called Office of Domestic Preparedness (ODP) and the state of Illinois REQUIRE the participation in NFIRS for most grant and loan programs. Furthermore, non-compliance of this act is subject to fines.

Accepted methods of filing reports are:

  1. NFIRS 4.1 Paper form
  2. NFIRS 4.1 Media (diskette, cd)
  3. NFIRS 4.1 Electronic email attachment
  4. NFIRS 5.0 Media (diskette, cd)
  5. NFIRS 5.0 Electronic email attachment
  6. NFIRS 5.0 Online entry USFA Data Entry Tool
