School Safety Drills: Time Line for This Year

Sept 1. All fire departments must contact the local schools to arrange dates for fire drills in October.

Sept. 14. The School administration must notify the fire department of 4 dates in October to conduct drills, one of which must be witnessed by the fire department.

If the fire department does not respond, the school is not required to conduct a "witnessed" drill. The department and the school can mutually agree on alternative dates and for more "witnessed" drills than required.

Oct. 1. Regional supreintendents must report to the ISBE and non-public schools must report to the OSFM regarding the drill plan review. Schools must report to the Regional superintendent before Oct. 1. For this year, schools may report that they are reviewing and updating their plans. It is obvious that they will not have time to go indepth in the review and everyone understands that. Reviews can take place during the year and results can be reported next Oct. 1.
